Geely has a new driver-assistance system called G-Pilot

The race to offer the most advanced driver-assistance systems possible on affordable models has just begun in the Chinese market, with proposals such as G-Pilot for vehicles from the Geely group.

Geely, the Chinese automotive giant with brands as well known as Volvo, Polestar or Zeekr, has just unveiled its new driver-assistance technology, known as G-Pilot. This system, which aims to position itself as a direct competitor to BYD’s “God’s Eye” or Tesla’s FSD, will soon be available on a large number of models across the group’s various brands.

At the presentation of this new technology, at an event held this past Monday, Geely explained that G-Pilot will be available in five different versions, offering everything from basic driver-assistance functions to advanced capabilities approaching full autonomous driving.

Geely’s goal is to progressively roll out this technology on a massive scale across all its brands. The different G-Pilot versions range from the most basic, called H1, which includes automatic parking assistance and highway autopilot, to the most sophisticated, known as H9, which can be classified as Level 3 under the SEA standard and uses artificial intelligence functions. In other words, in principle, with this latter version it should be possible for the driver to completely disengage from driving, although they must remain ready to take back control at any moment within a short period of time. This makes it impossible, for example, to fall asleep.

On the other hand, regarding the hardware used, the most basic versions of G-Pilot rely solely on cameras and radar, while the more advanced ones add LiDAR for greater precision.

Driver assistance for everyone

During a virtual presentation, Geely showed the first vehicle equipped with this technology, the Galaxy E8 electric saloon. This model features the H1 version of G-Pilot and has a starting price in the Chinese market of 149,800 yuan, which at the current exchange rate comes to roughly 20,000 euros.

Let us recall that BYD, another Chinese automotive giant, announced just a few days ago that its God’s Eye driver-assistance system will soon be available on some of the brand’s most affordable vehicles, and its integration will not be limited to the top ranges of its lineup. At the same time, other Chinese manufacturers such as XPENG or Xiaomi are also making significant efforts in this field, which clearly shows the level of competition in the Chinese market.
