The Volkswagen Tera is introduced in Brazil to provide access to the brand's SUV range

Volkswagen has unveiled the Tera, a compact SUV that represents the entry level of the range and will only be sold in the South American country for now.

The South American market is quite important for Volkswagen, so it’s no surprise that it has launched an exclusive model for Brazil and other countries in the region. This is the Volkswagen Tera, a compact SUV that is meant to sit slightly below the T-Roc and will be sold in Brazil for now.

The brand’s aim is to position this model against rivals such as the FIAT Pulse and the Nissan Kicks, with a price that will range between 100,000 and 140,000 reais, that is between 16,000 and 23,000 euros. It will be assembled at the Taubaté plant and will offer a design language very similar to that of the rest of the German brand’s SUVs.

At the front it features a fine grille with a honeycomb design. The LED daytime running lights sit above the LED headlights in two lines on each of them. The grille is not illuminated, but an LED strip has been installed across it, linking both light units. A large fake air intake sits below the grille, and there are two more, one on each side.

At the rear it offers a very attractive design that aims to stand out from similar models. The rear light units are joined by a black trim, as on the Volkswagen Tiguan and T-Cross. The exterior look is complemented by 17-inch wheels with a diamond design, although there may be cheaper versions with other wheels.

The technical details are not yet known, but it is known that it is based on the MQB A0 platform, the same one that shapes the Polo. Its length will be 4,074 millimetres and the wheelbase is 2,566 millimetres, which results in a very comfortable interior space.

The 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine is boosted by a turbo and delivers 116 CV. The six-speed automatic gearbox sends the power to the front wheels.

In principle, it will only be sold in Brazil and possibly in other countries in the region. But on other occasions a model has been launched for this country and has ended up reaching Europe. The clearest example is the Nivus, which was renamed the Taigo in our market, so it may well appear on our roads in a few years.
