Genesis aims to produce 21 thousand units of the GV90 luxury SUV annually

You will be able to see Genesis’s new flagship on European streets and roads in just under two years from now.

According to a recent report published in South Korean media, the annual production volume of the Genesis GV90 will reach 21 thousand units, thus surpassing that of the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, which in 2023 amounted to around 18,500 units. This ambitious target shows just how far Hyundai Motor Company is willing to go with its luxury brand Genesis in the automotive industry.

Hyundai Motor Company -which we will refer to as HMC from now on-, which manages both the Hyundai brand and Genesis, recently sent a request for quotation to various automotive suppliers detailing its future plans for electric vehicles based on the eM platform. This platform will replace the current E-GMP platform and will become the basis of HMC’s next generation of electric vehicles, including the highly anticipated Genesis GV90. In this way, the ambitious annual production target of 21 thousand GV90 units has become known, which would place HMC ahead of Mercedes-Benz with its EQS SUV.

The Genesis Neolun, on which the GV90 will be based, is a 5.25-metre-long prototype with certain peculiarities, such as the fact that it lacks a B-pillar. According to the latest reports, the production version of the GV90 will also retain this feature, although only in a limited special edition of a few hundred units, which will reach the market in the quarter following the initial launch.

The E-GMP platform already has a successor

The eM platform will allow greater structural rigidity compared with the E-GMP, which will make it easier to create a SUV of generous dimensions like this one without a B-pillar. HMC will thus be able to develop electric vehicles based on the eM platform with a lightweight yet very rigid body, using an integrated casting method with special alloys for the key structural components.

HMC also plans to move in 2025 from the current battery pack structure, with its cells organised into modules, to another alternative cell-to-pack, and it will be precisely the Genesis GV90 that will be the first vehicle to debut with this new structure.

Production of the Genesis GV90 will take place in a new plant that HMC has built in Ulsan, South Korea. Although the company has only mentioned that an electric SUV from Genesis will be the first model to roll out of this new plant, we can practically take for granted that this will be the GV90. On the other hand, some reports indicated some time ago that production would start in December 2025, but more recent ones now suggest that HMC may have postponed the definitive date until the first quarter of 2026 due to the slowdown in global demand for electric vehicles.

Finally, it should be noted that everything points to the new flagship of Genesis being available in Europe from April 2026.
