Goodbye to the 5.5 V8 Biturbo of Mercedes-AMG?

5.5 AMG

The German subsidiary that prepares the star’s vehicles continues on its path of combining efficiency and performance. That is why changes appear to be coming to the powertrain lineup of AMG.

We are talking about the 5.5 V8 Biturbo, which seems to be reaching the end of its commercial life even though it is a relatively modern engine, launched on the market in 2011.

We are talking about a “multi-purpose” engine, since it has been fitted -and still is- to countless models. From the S63 AMG (which debuted it in the previous generation), to the G63 AMG, including the E-Class, CLS, or ML, among others.
A twin-turbo V8 engine developed to replace the naturally aspirated 6.3 V8 (which paradoxically is still used in the C-Class and the SLS), as it did not meet the strict anti-pollution standards set by the European Union.
In this way, the 5.5 Biturbo already features more advanced technology, especially in environmental terms, such as direct injection or the Start&Stop system. The development of this engine has reached its peak with the newly launched S63 AMG (W222), which delivers 585 CV and 900 NM of torque.

All the rumours point to the successor of this road monster being developed based on the new 2.0 Turbo engine currently fitted to the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG. In this way, by joining two 2.0 blocks, we would end up with a 4.0 V8 Turbo that would also accept hybridisation, which would place future AMG models in an interesting balance between running economy and performance.
