McLaren Special Operations presents a new personalised P1

Exclusivity sometimes reaches unimaginable limits. If you own one of the units of the British member of the hybrid supercar trident, the McLaren P1, you will know that only 375 units were produced, and they sold out eight months after McLaren unveiled its hybrid sports car at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. But for all those for whom owning one of the 375 McLaren P1s built seems insufficiently exclusive, the British firm has the Special Operations department, where vehicles are customised to the owner’s preferences.

That is how we came to know the latest creation of McLaren Special Operations (MSO), specifically with the P1 belonging to the Managing Director of Kyte Associates, David Kyte. The chosen exterior colour scheme is a brilliant intense blue paint for the bodywork, gloss black finished wheels and a multitude of red details, including the splitter, the air intakes in the front bumper and bonnet, the sides, the sills, the retractable rear spoiler, the wing mirrors, the brake calipers and the wheel rims.

The cabin has also received a thorough round of modifications. Firstly, the centre console and the air vents of the climate control system are finished in the same bright blue colour that covers the bodywork, creating the perfect contrast with the carbon fibre that fills the interior of the McLaren P1, which is needed to keep the weight down to 1,400 kilograms. McLaren Special Operations lettering has been screen-printed onto the carbon door sill trims, while both doors feature a red detail running along their interior edges, in keeping with the exterior of the vehicle.

On the mechanical side, MSO has not intervened, as its role is limited to personalising the exterior and cabin of the McLaren sports cars, so the P1’s twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 engine continues to produce the original 727 CV and 723 Nm of torque, joined by the power supplied by the electric motor located behind the cabin, which adds 176 CV and 260 Nm of torque. A combined output of 903 CV.
