Mercedes-Benz is returning the EQS and EQE to the US market by relying on local production to avoid tariffs

The pause in production and sales of Mercedes-Benz’s EQS and EQE in the United States has finally proved temporary, and after a period of nearly five months, the German manufacturer has managed to reorganize so that things return to normal.

In an unexpected move, Mercedes-Benz has quietly resumed sales of its electric EQ family models in the United States, following an interruption of nearly five months in production and sales.

On 1 September 2025, the German manufacturer halted production of the versions intended for the American market of the EQS and EQE, in their saloon and SUV variants. This decision came just before the end of that month, when the federal government’s $7,500 tax incentive for new electric vehicles expired, an incentive that had driven part of the demand in the sector.

Almost five months after all that, both the EQS and the EQE are once again on sale in the United States. Speaking to the media, a company spokesperson explained that the pause in sales was due to a temporary adjustment in order availability to align with the real conditions of the North American market. The spokesperson also wanted to highlight the company’s ability to quickly adapt production and optimise its industrial network in response to fluctuations in demand, thereby maintaining its competitiveness.

The German manufacturer has not forgotten the North American market

In this way, Mercedes-Benz currently offers five fully electric models in the United States. These include the new electric CLA, the most recent addition to the range, and the luxurious EQS SUV Maybach at the top of the range. All these models are also produced locally, assembled at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama, which spares the company from facing import tariffs that would raise their price and significantly reduce their competitiveness. Prior to 1 September, the saloon variants of the EQS and EQE were imported from Germany, while the SUVs were already being produced at this same plant.

Although sales of the Mercedes-Benz EQ family electric models have fallen short of expectations, the German manufacturer has not thrown in the towel and, with this production readjustment, maintains its presence in the North American market, thus avoiding leaving a gap for other competitors to fill. Mercedes-Benz also continues to invest in offering a broad charging network to its North American customers, as demonstrated by the recent opening of a high-power station in Vancouver.
