Hold on tight! The BMW M models of the Neue Klasse will feature four electric motors

BMW has set out to redefine what it means to drive one of its M models in the new electric era, delivering exceptional performance and dynamic response without sacrificing the versatility needed for everyday use.

BMW has unveiled the first technical details of its future high-performance M models based on the Neue Klasse platform, set to reach the market from 2027 onwards. These fully electric vehicles will mark a before and after in terms of performance, while preserving the spirit of this legendary saga from the Bavarian brand.

The heart of this new generation will be the innovative BMW M eDrive system, which features a dedicated motor exclusively for each wheel across all Neue Klasse M models. These motors will be distributed across two drive units, one on the front axle and one on the rear, achieving a configuration that combines the best of rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, with the ability to fully disconnect the front axle to drive as if it were a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. In this way, not only is the driving dynamics typical of BMW M models enhanced, but efficiency is also improved on high-speed journeys, such as on motorways.

A central computer called Heart of Joy will be the brain responsible for managing this system, individually controlling each motor in milliseconds, adjusting both torque and power for each wheel, using specific software developed by BMW for its M models. As a result, the driver who takes the wheel of a new-generation BMW M will enjoy continuous and precise torque distribution, optimal traction in any situation, and energy recovery during braking that reaches practically the limit of grip, working in perfect synchronisation with the braking system.

BMW highlights that this architecture opens up a new dimension in dynamics and safety. Beyond being purely radical track-focused sports cars, the M models will be able to adapt to every moment, remaining perfectly suitable for daily use in urban or interurban journeys.

Every component of the vehicle will live up to what is expected of an M model

Finally, with regard to the battery pack, although the M models will retain the 800-volt architecture and also use sixth-generation cylindrical cells like the rest of the Neue Klasse models, there will also be some changes to meet the high-performance demands of these vehicles.

The battery packs of the M models will exceed 100 kWh of usable capacity and feature a new control module called Energy Master, together with an optimised cooling system. These additions will enable higher power peaks, faster charging and energy recovery values that lead the range. In addition, the battery pack casing will be integrated as a structural element, firmly connected to the front and rear axles, thereby significantly increasing the torsional rigidity of the assembly and improving the vehicle’s dynamic behaviour.

BMW M thus seeks to carry the DNA inherited from combustion-engined M models over to its new high-performance electric models of the Neue Klasse, delivering outstanding dynamic response, sensational performance and a high level of driving excitement. And all without sacrificing the versatility that makes them perfectly viable for everyday use.
