Mitsubishi goes electric: up to nine models will feature electrification

The Japanese brand will have nine electrified models by 2030, including the new Mitsubishi ASX, but also a pick-up, an SUV and two more battery-electric models

The Mitsubishi lineup is set to undergo a significant change in its engine offering. The Japanese company is starting to electrify its range. In total, up to nine models will receive electrification across their engine options, within the line-up of 16 new models arriving by 2028.

This will give buyers plenty of choice when it comes to the type of engine they prefer. Of those 16, nine will be hybrid models, and several of them will feature a fully electric drivetrain. Among the first will be the Mitsubishi ASX, which was unveiled a few months ago.

Mitsubishi Asx 10

This first Mitsubishi model with a hybrid drivetrain holds few surprises. It is built on the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi alliance and is very similar to the Renault Captur. It will come in two versions: a plug-in hybrid, and a full hybrid, plus another with mild hybridisation. Let’s look at the features of the hybrid Mitsubishi ASX.

In the plug-in version, the 1.6-litre combustion engine works together with two electric motors. Combined output is 116 kW, equivalent to 156 CV, with maximum torque of 300 Nm. The plug-in hybrid will have a 10.5 kWh battery. When running in electric mode, the Mitsubishi ASX can cover up to 49 kilometres.

This model will reach the European market soon and will be the first from the brand to feature a system of this kind. From this model onward, the company will offer more electrified models, such as the hybrid version of the ASX. This one will have a smaller 1.3 kWh battery and will arrive later.

Electrified Mitsubishi models

Before 2028, Mitsubishi will present an electric pick-up, along with an electric SUV and two other models with electric drivetrains. All of them will move forward thanks to the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi alliance, which will provide the manufacturer with the necessary technology.

By 2030 the brand wants battery cells with the capacity to store 15 GWh, which will be enough to power all the units it sells that year. To do so it will invest 210 billion yen, the equivalent of roughly 1,450 euros.

By 2030, most sales should be electrified models, while by 2035 all models will be pure electric, in line with international regulations.
