BMW adds the entry-level versions of its new compact SUV, the X2, to the range: the sDrive18i and xDrive18d, but the highly anticipated xDrive25d is left out

The range of the BMW X2, the new SUV (or as BMW calls it, SAC – Sport Activity Coupé –) compact model from the Bavarian brand, went on sale during the last quarter of 2017 with the launch of the 190 CV xDrive20d petrol and xDrive 2.0d diesel versions, both associated with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system and combined with the 7-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox.

Now, the range is expanded with the addition by BMW of two entry-level versions, which will make the X2 family more accessible to customers with smaller budgets who are nonetheless aspirational. These are the versions powered by the sDrive 18i and xDrive 18d engines.

The first, the petrol, is a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that produces 140 CV. It will be sold with a six-speed manual gearbox or with the seven-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox. The diesel variant is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit with TwinPower Turbo technology, also offered with both transmission options. In the diesel variant, the Steptronic transmission uses a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, as long as you do not opt for the xDrive four-wheel-drive variant, since the two elements are not compatible.

As for the top of the range of BMW’s new compact SUV, the X2 does not yet offer the most anticipated engine in the range, the powerful X2 xDrive 25d with 231 CV, which is expected to compete directly with the new Jaguar F-Pace and the more powerful Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA. For now this variant will remain unavailable on the Spanish market and, according to what has been announced, it will take some time before it arrives.

The X2 is the SUV version of the X1, although it has a clearly differentiated image from it. BMW wanted to make a more fun and dynamic car than its compact model, and for that reason it has made it slightly wider and lower, as well as a little shorter, yet it still offers a 470-litre boot.

Externally, its design is clearly distinctive from that of its compact sibling, especially at the rear, where the original BMW badge of the brand’s historic coupés proudly appears. The front is also very different, as the X2 features the characteristic BMW double-kidney grille in an inverted position. Likewise, in its trim levels it includes the M Sport X finishing kit, whose original design was developed directly by BMW Motorsport, the division responsible for the brand’s sporting developments.
