Honda reveals the first details of the sixth generation CR-V, which will arrive in Europe at the end of this year, although it has been on sale in the American market since last year. At the presentation, which took place in Germany, Honda also unveiled its new compact electric SUV, the Honda e:NY1.

The best-selling SUV of the Japanese brand arrives with a new exterior and interior design, the new Honda Sensing 360 safety system and, for the first time in the European market, a plug-in hybrid variant e:PHEV that joins the CR-V e:HEV full hybrid. Honda will thus compete on equal terms with other SUVs that also offer full hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, such as the Toyota RAV4 or the Hyundai Tucson.

With a considerable increase in dimensions, growing to 4.70 metres long, 1.86 metres wide and 1.66 metres high (11, 7 and 4 cm more, respectively), the new CR-V gains considerably in presence, offering a more robust look. But the most interesting thing is the increase in wheelbase, no less than 4 centimetres, which further enhances one of the CR-V’s long-standing virtues: its qualities as a family car, by improving interior space. Honda announces a small improvement in legroom in the rear seats and up to 10 degrees more recline for the rear seatbacks, and almost 20% more boot capacity.

The cabin’s dashboard has also been completely redesigned, maintaining the attention to detail and quality materials that characterise Honda. The Honda Connect infotainment system is included, with a 9-inch touchscreen. In addition to the Honda Sensing package, which is standard, a novelty is the so-called Honda Sensing 360 degree system (depending on the version), which adds extra sensors and cameras to eliminate any blind spot around the vehicle, making driving and parking easier.

Full hybrid or plug-in: two hybrid versions

For the e:HEV hybrid version, Honda now uses the propulsion system debuted in the Civic. Here you can read the road test of the new Honda Civic e:HEV, and learn more details about the operation and efficiency of this propulsion system. As for the new plug-in hybrid version, called e:PHEV, it uses the same petrol engine, a 2-litre 4-cylinder running on the Atkinson cycle and producing 184 CV, coupled to an electric motor, with system power above 200 CV.

This version uses a 17.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be recharged in about 2.5 hours using a wallbox, and offers a WLTP electric-mode range of up to 82 km, on a par with its main rivals in this segment.
