Technological marvel: VW unveils a 1.0 TSI engine with 272 CV

If yesterday we told you about the W12 engine that the VW Group has just presented at the Vienna Motor Symposium, this time it is time to discover something like its “antagonist”.

It is a new powertrain that is still being developed and fine-tuned; in fact, its inclusion in series production vehicles has not been confirmed. We are talking about a 1.0 TSI.

At first glance it doesn’t seem “that serious”, since today Volkswagen already uses a three-cylinder 1.0 TSI unit in several models in its range, with outputs reaching up to 115 CV. It is a very well-tuned engine, with more than decent performance, remarkable smoothness for a three-cylinder and undoubtedly economical operation.

But what would you think if VW now presented the world with a variant of this engine…with more than 250 CV? Well yes, that is what VW’s engineers have done at the Vienna Motor Symposium, leaving both insiders and outsiders astonished.

To be more precise, the final output of this new 1.0 TSI rises to no less than 272 CV, a staggering figure for an engine with a displacement of just one litre and three cylinders. Peak torque reaches 270 Nm. As is to be expected, this engine brings together the most novel technologies, incorporating “part of the DNA of the Polo WRC”.

This engine is supercharged by a fixed-geometry turbo, to which an electric compressor (E-Booster) is added, which presumably eliminates delays in power delivery1071213. Naturally, direct injection with a high-pressure fuel supply system is also present.

This engine is not yet planned for any road vehicle, although it is quite possible that in the coming months its use in sporty models will be considered.
