Tesla Model 3 could get a 100 kWh battery

The Tesla Model 3 could be fitted with Ludicrous Mode, which would make it one of the fastest Tesla cars we’ve ever seen.

The Tesla Model 3 will soon receive a new 100 kWh battery pack and the same Ludicrous Mode as the Tesla Model S Performance.

Recently, while exploring the source code of an update for the Tesla Model 3, Twitter user ‘greentheonly’ found a mention of a 100 kWh battery pack, as well as a Ludicrous Mode option.

If the entry-level Tesla model receives both updates, it could become the company’s fastest-accelerating production vehicle (until the new-era Tesla Roadster arrives).

The current Tesla Model 3 Performance, sitting at the top of the Tesla Model 3 family, features a 75 kWh battery pack, so a 100 kWh battery would represent a 33.3 percent jump in capacity.

Tesla Model 3 to get new 100 kWh battery

Because the Tesla Model 3 has a shorter wheelbase than the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X, which are currently offered with a 100 kWh battery, it is very unlikely that Tesla will simply take its existing 100 kWh battery and place it under the skin of the Tesla Model 3. Instead, we may instead see a more power-dense battery.

Anyone who has driven a Tesla Model 3 Performance will tell you it is a very quick car. In fact, it can blast to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. There is talk that the car will receive a software update costing around 2,000 euros to boost acceleration, which could bring the 0-100 km/h figure down to a range of 2 seconds. If a 100 kWh battery and Ludicrous Mode find their way into a future derivative of the Tesla Model 3, it is entirely possible that it could reach 100 km/h in under 2.5 seconds.

Tesla Model 3 Crash Test

The sedan, after all, already has an efficient powertrain, and its batteries are made up of 2170 cells manufactured at the Gigafactory 1 in Nevada. At least from the perspective of EV batteries and powertrain, there appears to be nothing standing in the way of the Tesla Model 3 receiving a Ludicrous Mode upgrade.

What is quite interesting is that CEO Elon Musk has confirmed this in the past. Just a few weeks after the Tesla Model 3’s initial unveiling, Elon Musk was asked on Twitter whether Ludicrous Mode v would come to the more affordable mid-size sedan. Musk’s reply comprised only two words, but they were direct: “Of course,” he wrote.

So far, the Tesla Model 3 has been causing its own disruption in the high-performance sedan market, even without a dedicated launch mode for straight-line racing. Track Mode is ideal for closed-circuit driving, but it is hard to argue against the idea of a Tesla Model 3 equipped with Ludicrous Mode that also dominates on the drag strip. Tesla could even earn substantial revenue by introducing Ludicrous to the Model 3, as the feature mainly involves software optimizations.

Tesla’s “Plaid Powertrain” update for the Model S and Model X, along with a possible Ludicrous upgrade for the Model 3 (and probably the Model Y), marks the start of a new era for the company’s electric cars. If Elon Musk’s recent Twitter announcements are any indication, Tesla appears to be building a generation of vehicles that are ridiculously quick in a straight line and capable of performing excellently on a track. Such vehicles, if they exist, serve as perfect companions to the company’s halo model, the next-generation Tesla Roadster, which was designed to be a “hard punch” for gasoline-powered vehicles.
