The DGT will check the condition of our windscreen while we drive

The DGT launches a campaign to check that the safety elements of our cars are in good condition.

The Dirección General de Tráfico (Spanish Traffic Authority) has launched a new intensive monitoring campaign of the condition of vehicles§h7# travelling on the roads, which will run from 15 to 21 January. Officers of the Guardia Civil Traffic Group -and the rest of local and regional police forces that join the campaign- will pay particular attention to the proper maintenance and tuning of all the vehicle’s safety elements: tyres, lighting, signalling and the windscreen.

Regarding the windscreen, the DGT specifies that “the driver must verify that the windscreen shows no damage whatsoever, as it is a fundamental part of the vehicle’s structural strength, in the effectiveness of the airbag and in its role as support for cameras and sensors of driver assistance devices“.

The importance of the windscreen for road safety

Besides its obvious implications for visibility, the windscreen contributes up to 30% of the vehicle’s structural strength and is a key element in preventing the roof from collapsing in the event of a rollover. The effectiveness of the passenger airbag is also conditioned by the good condition of the windscreen, since when it deploys it rests against it, exerting enormous pressure.

Finally, the active safety ADAS systems, which include lane change warning or emergency braking, are based on numerous sensors that are usually installed on the windscreen. When a windscreen is replaced, the ADAS cameras and sensors must be removed from the broken glass and fitted to the new one. Once installed, these systems must be recalibrated to ensure they work with maximum precision and send the correct information to the safety systems.

The car fleet is too old, which affects safety

According to the DGT, the average age of passenger cars in which fatal road accident victims were travelling in 2017 was 13.2 years, a figure that has risen from 12 years in 2016. This situation is of great concern to the Spanish Traffic Authority, which is why campaigns have been launched exclusively to monitor the condition of vehicles on the roads.
