Ford Mustang Mach-E Electric Cars
The Ford Mustang Mach-e will feature LFP batteries
Starting this year, the Ford Mustang Mach-e will feature LFP batteries.

The Ford Mustang Mach-e will feature LFP batteries that will be cheaper and offer faster charging technology. Specifically, lithium iron phosphate batteries will be manufactured at the new Michigan plant, which will be operational starting in 2026.
The high price of nickel and cobalt prevents the automotive sector from producing more affordable electric cars. The brand with the oval is developing a new type of battery with a chemical composition very different from that of some of its electric vehicles.
This same year, 2023, the Ford Mustang Mach-e will feature these new batteries, and in 2024 the Ford F-150 Lightning will as well. These new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will eventually be built at the battery plant announced by Ford, the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, which is scheduled to open in 2026.
This is what the new Ford batteries are like
As its name suggests, traditional nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) batteries rely heavily on nickel and cobalt, but LFP batteries do not. Ford will offer both types of batteries (though not in the same vehicles) to protect itself against possible material shortages and reduce customer waiting lists while it seeks to increase its electric vehicle production. Under its
Ford+ plan, the brand with the oval expects to deliver 600,000 electric vehicles worldwide in 2023 and 2 million by 2026.
It is worth noting that LFP batteries offer some attractive benefits over their NCM equivalents, including lower cost, faster charging times, and a longer service life. But there are also some areas where NCM units are superior. They perform better in cold climates and are suitable for carrying heavy loads and covering long distances between charges.
Likewise, Ford has already reduced the prices of the Mustang Mach-E and has not said whether the new batteries will allow it to reduce costs further or whether they will simply help offset the loss of revenue resulting from the recent price cuts. There are also no specific details about those
shorter charging times or the reduced range alluded to in comparison with NCM batteries.
We will have to wait even longer to find out whether these batteries can ultimately become a real alternative to the technology used today.
