The importance of proper tyre maintenance and the fines contemplated by the DGT

The Tyre Manufacturers’ Commission has today issued a call that reminds us of the importance of keeping tyres in good condition, the requirements of the Traffic Law regarding them, and the penalties that the same law provides for if we are driving on worn tyres. I think it is worth mentioning the main points to which the manufacturers’ commission refers.
The traffic law stipulates that tyres must have a tread depth greater than or equal to 1.6 mm in the main grooves of the tread, and that their condition must meet the minimum conditions of use. Tyres that are old or that have been used while overinflated or underinflated wear out more than they should, becoming almost unusable over time. It is also good to know the surprises the DGT has prepared in case they catch us with tyres in poor condition.
Just to know the DGT fines, it is worth inspecting the condition of your tyres. The DGT fines 150 euros per tyre those who are below what the law establishes, and it can even impound the vehicle if all four tyres are in poor condition.
To be even more convinced, the DGT offers the following statistic: 27% of Spanish vehicles are being driven on bald or worn tyres and carry a very high risk of suffering an accident due to deterioration and wear. Having all this in mind, do not think only about the fines imposed by the DGT, but about the value of your own life or that of your family, whom you carry in the car, during this holiday season.
