The Mercedes-AMG One will begin reaching its owners in 2021

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that deliveries of the first units of the supercar will begin in 2021.

A few days ago, some information emerged about the Mercedes-AMG One suggesting a possible delay in the first deliveries of the supercar due to some complications with its powertrain derived from the Formula 1 single-seater, but this time it is the first time the Mercedes star brand has confirmed it.

Michael Knoller, head of product management at Mercedes-AMG, has spoken with various sources about the upcoming supercar, revealing that the company has already informed customers about the delay and that the first deliveries of the Mercedes-AMG One will begin in 2021.

“When you make Formula 1 technology legal on the street, you have to go on a journey with the customers.” “We had some challenges, but now we have reached a turning point.”

Apparently, these challenges involved making the supercar idle at 1,200 rpm constantly to meet emissions test requirements.

Mercedes-AMG One, its owners will have to wait until 2021

“You have a leak in the throttle bodies in Formula One and nobody cares, because it runs at an idle speed of 5,000 rpm,” said AMG boss Tobias Moers last year. “At an idle speed of 1,200 rpm, emissions regulations must be met. You need a stable and proper idle. If it’s unstable, its emissions are unstable.” Knoller now also admitted that meeting noise regulations was also quite challenging.

The upcoming Mercedes-AMG One will share its powertrain with the 2017 Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 single-seater, which means it will be equipped with a 1.6-litre V6 hybrid engine. The powertrain will use the same electric-coil turbocharger, the MGU-K electric motor and the liquid-cooled batteries as the single-seater driven by Lewis Hamilton, but will also add an additional pair of MGU-K motors on the front axle for full torque-vectoring AWD.

Other specifications include a powertrain redline limited to 11,000 rpm, below the F1’s 14,000 rpm, and total output is expected to exceed the 1,000 CV barrier. Mercedes-AMG promises a 0-200 km/h sprint in under six seconds and a top speed of over 350 km/h. Logically, the technological challenge of bringing such a car to market requires hundreds of hours of testing. And that is what Mercedes-AMG is doing with the first prototypes of Project One, which are circulating camouflaged on secret test tracks closed to the public in England, following the tuning of the powertrain unit in Brixworth.

Now it remains to be known when the definitive date of commercialisation will be for a car that will have much more demand than the 250 units rumoured to be built, at a price that could be close to 3 million euros.
