The time has come for the new Audi Q4 e-tron: this is the new electric SUV from Audi

Audi unveils the interior of the new Audi Q4 e-tron, and takes the opportunity to show us the first images of the production car, wearing eye-catching camouflage.

The Audi Q4 e-tron is one of the electric SUVs that are set to make a splash in 2021. Until now we knew quite a lot about it, because it will essentially be the realisation of the Audi Q4 e-tron concept prototype. It is a strategy, presenting a “show car” first that largely previews what the production car will look like, one that the brand with the four rings has already accustomed us to.

They did exactly that, for instance, with the Audi e-tron and the Audi e-tron Sportback. And more recently with the Audi e-tron GT. Now it is the turn of the compact SUV. The new Audi Q4 e-tron will become, at least for a while, the entry-level model in Audi’s electric car range.

The truth is that in this first wave of information about the Audi Q4 e-tron, we were expecting details about the interior. And so it has been. Audi has released a complete set of images showing every detail of the dashboard design of the production Q4 e-tron, and its technology in terms of connectivity, multimedia and infotainment systems. We will talk about this a little later.

But the brand with the four rings has also surprised us with a good number of images of the Audi Q4 e-tron in different settings, even in motion. Of course they are keeping an ace up their sleeve, and we will still have to wait at least a few weeks to see the final car without camouflage.

Its final dimensions have also been made official: 4.59 metres long, 1.865 wide and 1.61 high, with a wheelbase of 2.76 metres. Let us recall that the Audi Q4 e-tron is built on the MEB modular platform of the Volkswagen Group, which also underpins, among others, the VW ID.4 and the Skoda Enyaq.

It is worth taking a look at the image gallery, to get an idea of what the electric SUV will really look like. And also, why not, to enjoy the original decoration the brand’s designers have prepared for the occasion.

The set of images is accompanied by some interesting technical drawings showing, for example, the parts of the cabin where Audi uses recycled materials. Or how one of the novelties Audi incorporates in its new electric car works: the impressive head-up display system, projecting information onto the windscreen, which operates with augmented reality.

A compact SUV with great interior space

The Q4 boasts a digitised interior of the highest quality, which is no surprise at Audi any more. But also interior space. The battery’s placement under the floor and the absence of a centre tunnel, together with the generous wheelbase and short overhangs, allow the company to promise passenger space typical of cars in the higher size category.

The boot, in particular, offers 520 litres of capacity, expandable to 1,490 litres by folding down the rear seats. The number of storage spaces spread throughout the cabin is also highlighted, with almost 25 litres

However, where the Q4 stands out, like all new Audi models, is in the digitalisation of its interior. The digital instrumentation, the Audi Virtual Cockpit, has a 10.25-inch screen, while the MMI touch multimedia system screen can optionally reach 11.6 inches. This makes it the largest used in a Audi to date.

Another interior novelty, with a dashboard clearly oriented towards the driver in which the floating centre console also stands out, is the new touch-operated steering wheels. There are three versions, some flattened at the top and bottom, and the multifunction buttons are now touch-sensitive instead of using rotary controls or conventional push buttons. They are backlit, allow scrolling (as on a mobile phone) and emit haptic confirmation when pressed.

Head-up display with augmented reality

To top it all off, the Q4 e-tron is the first to debut the new information system projected onto the Audi windscreen, which works with augmented reality. It will be available as an option.

It presents information on a surface that can occupy no less than 70 inches, with two separate levels, one for the so-called “status zone” and another for the augmented reality zone. The effect is as if the driver were seeing the information “floating” on the road, about 10 metres ahead.

The possibilities are incredible, especially for navigation, with dynamic symbols that make route guidance easier. Or with visual suggestions to get more out of all the capabilities of the driver assistance systems.
