The Twincharger engine of Volkswagen on the verge of extinction

Since 2005, Volkswagen has been offering this 1.4-litre engine, which combines a turbocharger and a supercharger, and which the brand has fitted to some models of Audi, Seat, Volkswagen itself and even Skoda. Well, the 1.4 TSI Twincharger engine is at risk of being cancelled.
According to sources close to the brand and to whom the people at Autocar had access, Volkswagen is about to cancel production of the engine, arguing that it is too complicated and also too expensive to produce.
The end of the Twincharger would pave the way for the new generations of small turbo engines, with similar results, but at a much lower cost, according to sources within Volkswagen.
The use of the Twincharger engine has allowed a good number of the group’s models to adopt this new technology, first presented with the Volkswagen Golf GT Sport. The model that has made the most of the Twincharger in terms of power has been the Seat Ibiza Cupra with almost 200 brake horsepower (bhp).
