The Volkswagen Polo leaves Pamplona and moves to South Africa. Which model will replace it?
After 40 years, the Volkswagen Polo has stopped being produced in Spain and will be manufactured in South Africa, while Pamplona will host the VW ID.2.

40 years ago, the Volkswagen plant in Pamplona began producing the Volkswagen Polo, a segment B compact car that has become one of the brand’s most popular models. For all this time, the Navarran capital has been the place where a model that has surpassed 8.4 million units produced was built. Although it has been gradually losing market share to SUV bodystyles, that does not mean it has been discontinued.
That said, production has ended in Pamplona and has moved to a plant in South Africa. That is where the brand’s compact will now be built. It is a plant that will concentrate production for the whole world and that frees the Pamplona factory to host two new electric models.

In Pamplona, production of the Volkswagen Taigo and the T-Cross continues. Both models are based on the same platform as the Polo. This means that both may also end up travelling to the same plant that will host the discontinued model in Pamplona. So, which models will replace this one?
Two electric models made in Pamplona
The plant is now beginning the transformation process to host the production of two small electric cars from the brand. The idea is for the first of them to be the Volkswagen ID.2, an electric car that aims to be the entry point to the brand’s electric range. It is the size of the Polo, but with a larger interior, similar to the Volkswagen Golf.
The expected range of this model is 450 kilometres. It was presented a few months ago and will go on sale in mid-2025.
The electric model will have an approximate price of 25,000 euros, placing it among the most affordable in the segment. In the near future, the entry-level electric models from CUPRA and Skoda will join this model, so three electric models will be manufactured at this Spanish plant.
