This is the restored Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa celebrating Porsche Design's 50th anniversary
Porsche Design celebrates its 50th anniversary with two special editions, one of which features the restoration of a Porsche 911 T 2.4 converted to the “S” specification

It was 1972 when Ferdinand Alexander, eldest son of Ferry Porsche, and his brother Hans-Peter founded Porsche Design Studio, an independent company from the brand which, through a wide range of products, has become the exclusive lifestyle style brand of Porsche and which, in 2022, celebrates its 50th anniversary. To mark it, Porsche is commemorating it with a special edition of the Porsche 911 Targa and with the restoration of a 1972 911 S 2.4 Targa, the latter being our protagonist today.
We recently told you about Porsche’s intention to celebrate this 50th anniversary with these two very special models, and today we are going to take a closer look at the 1972 911 S 2.4 Targa that the brand has restored. In reality, it is a 911 T 2.4 Targa, whose chassis and engine have been adapted to the specifications the “S” version originally had. The model used as the base was in poor condition, even missing some parts, which under normal circumstances would be a headache for carrying out the project, but since significant modifications were going to be made, this was not a major problem.

Once restored, the 1972 911 S 2.4 Targa presents itself to us with a solid black painted body, to which satin platinum stripes have been added on the sides as contrast, along with the Porsche Design emblem. This last color is also present on the roll bar, created using laser technology in a new interpretation of the brushed stainless steel of the original classic model. The final exterior touch comes from the Fuchs wheels in anodized finish and the “Porsche Design 50” badge on the rear grille, together with a reproduction of F. A. Porsche’s signature.

The greatest challenge the Porsche craftsmen faced was the restoration of the interior, since, for example, adapting the materials chosen for the upholstery to seats that are 50 years old was no easy task. The upholstery combines Sport-Tex fabric with a black and grey Cool check pattern present in the central area of the seats, the door trims and the lower part of the dashboard, with the rest being upholstered in black leather.

To make it clear that we are looking at a very special model, the 1972 911 S 2.4 Targa includes a “Porsche Design 50” badge on the passenger side, which is also present on the vehicle’s tool and documentation bag. Incidentally, the vehicle documentation is delivered in a presentation box together with a key case of original design by F. A. Porsche and a scale model of this same restored vehicle.

Mechanically, as I mentioned at the beginning, the Porsche Classic experts made the appropriate modifications to the chassis to adapt it to the specifications of the “S” version and, likewise with the engine, which has a displacement of 2,341 cc delivering a power output of 190 CV at 6,500 rpm, and is equipped with a mechanical fuel injection system.
