Top 10: the electric cars of 2018 with the longest range on the market
In the Spanish electric vehicle market you can find cars with ranges from 200 kilometres up to 600 kilometres on a single charge.
The energy transition and climate change are driving rapid changes in the automotive industry. Electric vehicles are no longer a utopia on our streets, although we are still at the beginning of this process. However, one of the major drawbacks is the range of electric cars. Despite this handicap, there are various models and brands offering vehicles with a more than interesting range. Below, the top 10 of electric cars with the longest range on the market.
Hyundai Nexo
Currently, the vehicle with the longest range on our market is the Hyundai Nexo. This car uses a hydrogen fuel cell. In this way, the SUV from the South Korean brand offers up to 666 kilometres of range. Furthermore, these figures are based on the WLTP homologation cycle, with more realistic data regarding consumption and polluting emissions.

Tesla Model S
The second model on this list is the Tesla Model S, which offers different range figures depending on its version . The first saloon from the Californian brand does not drop below 450 km under normal driving conditions. Below are the three trims of the Model S:
- Tesla Model S 75D: reaches 466 kilometres according to the WLTP cycle.
- Tesla Model S P100D: up to 572 kilometres of range according to the WLTP homologation.
- Tesla Model S 100D: this version achieves 594 kilometres of range according to the WLTP cycle.

Tesla Model X
The podium of electric vehicles with the longest range is closed by the Tesla Model X. The North American electric SUV achieves up to 565 kilometres of range. However, these figures are calculated according to the NEDC homologation cycle. Thus, although no calculations exist, its performance could drop. As with the previous model, depending on its variant, the range can change.
- Tesla Model X 75D: reaches 565 kilometres.
- Tesla Model X 100D: up to 380 kilometres of range.

Tesla Model 3
Despite being the last of the Californian brand to reach the market, the Tesla Model §h130Renaulth131§ can exceed 540 kilometres of range. However, these figures vary according to the trim of the vehicle chosen.
- Tesla Model 3 Performance: exceeds 530 kilometres.
- Tesla Model 3 Mid Range: close to 420 kilometres of range. This version has a motor at the rear.
- Tesla Model 3 Long Range: capable of reaching 544 kilometres with two electric motors.
- Tesla Model 3 Standard: the basic version of the saloon exceeds 350 kilometres.

Jaguar I-PACE
Although we are looking at the first electric vehicle from the British brand, the Jaguar I-PACE offers a range between 415 and 470 kilometres. Furthermore, these figures have been calculated according to the WLTP homologation cycle. The SUV also features a battery of 90 kWh along with two electric motors, generating 400 CV of power and 696 Nm of peak torque.

Audi e-tron
Like Jaguar, the Audi e-tron has become the first fully electric car from the German firm. The SUV’s range figures are higher than 400 kilometres thanks to its 95 kWh battery. Likewise, these range figures have been calculated through the WLTP cycle.

Hyundai Kona Electric
The Hyundai Kona Electric is the second model from the South Korean brand to appear in this top 10. However, its range will depend on the type of battery it has. If it has a 39 kWh battery its range approaches 290 kilometres, while the 64 kWh battery offers up to 449 kilometres. Both versions have been calculated according to the WLTP homologation cycle.

Renault Zoe
The Renault Zoe offers a range of close to 300 kilometres. The French brand’s urban electric car fits the new R110 motor under the homologation WLTP. Furthermore, this model will receive a 41 kWh battery. However, with the 22 kWh battery it reaches 240 kilometres of range according to the NEDC cycle.

Nissan LEAF
The Nissan LEAF has a 40 kWh battery and a 150 CV motor, offering 320 Nm of torque. This allows the vehicle to achieve around 380 kilometres of range according to the NEDC cycle. However, the data according to the WLTP homologation place the compact’s range between 265 and 280 kilometres.

Hyundai IONIQ
Finally, the third model from the Asian brand to make it into this top 10 is the Hyundai IONIQ. Along with its 28 kWh battery and the 120 CV motor, the South Korean vehicle reaches 280 kilometres of range. However, these figures are calculated according to the NEDC cycle, so its range will exceed 200 kilometres according to WLTP.

Some of the major drawbacks remain the charging points and the price of this type of vehicle. These are some of its biggest obstacles, despite having acceptable range figures. However, the speed at which electrification in cars is developed and implemented is increasing.
