Volkswagen unveils a 2.0-litre diesel engine with an electric turbocharger

Volkswagen has unveiled, in a technical presentation held in Wolfsburg (Germany), a new version of the high-output 2.0 TDI four-cylinder.
This revamp of the current 2.0-litre TDI four-cylinder twin-turbo engine, which produces 240 CV, has been achieved by fitting an electrically driven two-stage turbocharger, which delivers 272 CV.
Although Volkswagen has yet to reveal anything about peak torque, it is most likely to be slightly higher than the 500 Nm available in the Passat.
This additional power has been achieved not only through the electric turbocharger, but also through the installation of a new variable valve timing system and a common rail injection system, which operates at pressures of up to 2500 bar.
On the other hand, Volkswagen has also provided details of a new 10-speed DSG gearbox, which will be able to handle up to 550 Nm of peak torque.
As an evolution of the current six-speed unit, the new gearbox will feature a fuel-saving function along with a new brake energy recovery system, which promises to be more efficient than before.
