Volvo shows us the first lines of its future mid-size models

The Swedish manufacturer has revealed the complete exterior image and some technical data of two new prototypes that had already been announced in recent days in teaser form. Their names are Volvo 40.1 and Volvo 40.2.
Volvo has recently rejuvenated its most luxurious model range with the addition of the new Volvo XC90, S90 and V90. Far from resting, they continue “hard at work,” and it seems we will soon see news in the prestigious Swedish brand’s mid-range lineup.
These two new prototypes are the basis for future models of the 40 line, which currently includes the V40 and V40 Cross Country. Therefore, these two new models will use the new modular platform for compact vehicles called CMA (Compact Modular Architecture).

In the case of the Volvo 40.1 prototype, it has an SUV look with lines that inevitably recall those of the brand’s luxurious crossover, the Volvo XC90. Of course, in a considerably more compact size. We can also see black protective cladding on the lower part of the bodywork and the distinctive daytime running lights known as Volvo’s “Thor’s hammer.” At the rear, the taillights stand out, thin yet elongated in an L shape. The final production version will most likely be named Volvo XC40, although the manufacturer has not yet commented on this.

If the 40.1 reminded us of the XC90, the 40.2 prototype makes us think inevitably of the S90, more for its rear lights, which have a C shape, than for its front end. It stands out that, despite its saloon-type silhouette, the ground clearance appears elevated, although its overall height does not seem very high, giving a strong sense of width. Viewed from the side, we sense an elongated model, while from the front the bodywork gives the feeling of a very wide car.

It seems that Volvo has decided to follow a strategy similar to that of Mercedes, making its mid-size models resemble the larger cars, so we can practically have the same car at a smaller scale.
According to the manufacturer there will be alternative-propulsion versions such as a plug-in hybrid and a purely electric variant that will arrive last. The plug-in hybrid, which will be called T5, will have a three-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, combined with a dual-clutch robotised gearbox.
“Production of the first vehicle of the new 40 series is scheduled to begin in 2017,” says Volvo president Hakan Samuelsson.
