We can rest easy: the ban on combustion engines is going to be lifted

After years of setting a deadline for banning the sale of combustion engines in Europe, the decision has been made to postpone that date.

For years now, we have known that the European Union is willing to end cars with combustion engines. It has even had a date in mind for some time, the year 2035. From that year onward, the sale of cars with combustion engines was set to be banned. The only possible option would have been electric motorisation.

However, this plan has been held back by the industry, which did not welcome the idea of setting the end date for combustion engines at this point. Little by little, more countries have chosen not to support this measure, and several meetings have been held with officials of the European Union to prevent this ban from taking effect.

Brands such as Volvo and Polestar were in favour of this measure, as they have strongly committed to electric mobility with major investments. Against it, many countries have taken a stance, among which the most important players in the automotive industry stand out, namely Germany, France and Italy. Spain has maintained a position of support for the measure.

But the pressure has paid off, and it seems that there is finally a clear position. There will be no ban on combustion engines in 2035, although limitations and conditions are expected so that these engines can remain on the market.

Electric motors will remain a priority, but new alternatives are being considered, such as synthetic fuels and biofuels. With the use of these fuels, a significant reduction in polluting gases could be achieved in a fairer and more efficient way.

The change to the planning of the ban on these engines does not set a definitive date, although it could be extended to 2050, though there is no forecast for this. So we will be watching what the European Commission communicates on the matter and the new conditions for the road map towards decarbonising the industry in Europe.
