NIO targets new markets with the start of production of the right-hand-drive Firefly

The Firefly was officially unveiled last April and, initially, was only available in China. By the end of October, Firefly had delivered 26,242 units of this premium urban electric model.

Firefly, the Chinese manufacturer’s second brand NIO focused on premium urban vehicles, has just started production of the only model in its range for now, in its right-hand-drive version. The company will soon ship a first batch of these vehicles to Singapore, which will become the first Southeast Asian market to sell this model.

If everything goes according to plan, the first Firefly deliveries in Singapore will take place in early 2026, although no specific date has been confirmed yet. For the exclusive distribution of this model in the country, Firefly has chosen Wearnes Automotive, a distributor until now specialised in luxury and exclusive brands such as Lotus, Pininfarina, Polestar and Rimac.

Following the start of production, Jin Ge, Firefly’s current CEO, explained that this new right-hand-drive version is practically identical to the left-hand-drive model sold in China. He pointed out only minor differences, such as the fact that in markets like Singapore the seats are not heated, since this feature is not needed there due to the country’s climate.

The United Kingdom will welcome the Firefly with open arms

On the other hand, Firefly’s boss has confirmed that the price of this model will be higher than that of the BYD Dolphin, justifying it by the more premium positioning of the former. After the debut of this electric city car in Singapore, the brand intends to reach new left-hand-traffic markets throughout 2026. In this regard, some reports claim the company is already looking for distribution partners in Thailand or the United Kingdom, and is also studying following the same path in Australia and New Zealand.

The British market generates particular enthusiasm within the company, as the United Kingdom does not apply high tariffs on vehicles imported from China, has few local brands of its own, shows good acceptance of Chinese proposals and, being the home country of the iconic MINI, has a fairly favourable tradition towards small premium electric vehicles.

In Europe, the Firefly first debuted in Norway and the Netherlands, and later also reached the streets and roads of Belgium. This urban model will also soon arrive in other European countries, such as Austria, Denmark, Greece, Luxembourg and Portugal. As an interesting fact, Firefly has revealed that its European customers are on average older than those in China, aged between 45 and 55, or even older in some cases.
