If you’re into the world of motoring, you’ve surely heard the term sleeper more than once, but what is a sleeper car? It’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. What does this mean? These are models with a very understated look that hide surprising performance. No, the BMW 320d with M3 stickers that your neighbour has is exactly the opposite. These kinds of vehicles are becoming fashionable among car enthusiasts, and more and more drivers are tempted to drive one of these models, which, luckily, still exist.

Within the sleeper category there are two types. On the one hand are those that were born as sleepers, and on the other are those that were later modified to turn them into real giant-killers, while keeping their standard external appearance. Key examples of sleepers that were born with that status include the Lancia Thema Ferrari 8:32 and the Volkswagen Golf G60 from 1989. This model was very discreet, but under its bonnet lay the impressive mechanicals of the Volkswagen Golf GTi 16v with a G-type supercharger. This Golf reached 210 CV. A true object of desire.

Sleepers that have been modified after the fact, with the aim of creating a genuine sports car without raising aesthetic suspicions, usually undergo frequent modifications such as an engine swap. Across the world there are already many such conversions; one of the most common is fitting a 2JZ engine into an BMW E36, but many mechanics and enthusiasts are eager to own a model like this. It is also important to note that changing the engine is not the only requirement for a sleeper; it is advisable to modify the suspension, brakes and steering, and even reinforce the chassis so that the torque does not twist it.

Enthusiasts who build this kind of sleeper after the fact often use models such as the BMW 3 Series E30, the Mini, the Volkswagen Golf, the Ford Escort, the Ford Sierra, the Peugeot 406, the Honda Civic and even the Mercedes-Benz W124.

Throughout automotive history, many models have come to market as genuine factory sleepers. If you’re someone who loves having the hair on your arms stand up the moment you touch the accelerator, don’t hesitate to buy one of these vehicles, provided you find one at a good price. Keep in mind that some of them don’t have incredibly high prices, such as the BMW 318is with E30 bodywork. Get ready to discover just a few of the most interesting models; be warned, sleepers are usually high-performance saloons.

The Alfa Romeo 164 QV is one of those cars that wins you over with its sound and its personality. It features a 3.0-litre V6 engine designed by Busso. Its output is 200 CV with the 12-valve engines and 232 CV in later versions with four-valve-per-cylinder heads. It is fun and offers excellent performance. The four-ring brand has also launched a few sleepers of its own. One is the Audi 200 Turbo, which had a 20-valve engine. It reached the market in 1979, and today its value is on the rise. The BMW M5 E39 is one of those iconic models that anyone would want in their garage.

The list goes on with the Citroën CX GTi Turbo, the Citroën Xantia Activa V6, the Ford Scorpio Cosworth, the Ford Mondeo ST 220, the Mazda3 MPS, the Mercedes-Benz E500, the Opel Senator 24V, the Peugeot 406 V6, the Renault Safrane Biturbo, the Saab 9-5 Aero or the Volkswagen Passat W8, among others.
