A Audi R8 Green Hell could be on its way

An enhanced version of the Audi R8 could be on its way. However, it would only be available for Europe.

The V10-powered supercar from the four-ring brand could be going after the lap record at the Green Hell. How could it achieve this? Through a new, more powerful version. Little is known about this incredible supercar, but what we do know is that it appears to be part of the German brand’s plans.

Audi has filed, specifically in early March, a patent application for the name R8 Green Hell. This could mean that the four-ring brand may have its sights set on a track-focused version.

Some sources claim that the possible special edition could be more powerful than the current Audi R8 Performance, which already produces 602 CV. Everything points to the new supercar being a limited edition with the aim of setting a new lap record at the Nürburgring.

Currently, it is Lamborghini, a brand that also belongs to the Volkswagen Group, that holds the lap record with a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. This supercar set a time of 6:44.97.

Audi, going for the lap record at the Green Hell?

The experts at Audi had previously said they were struggling to keep the naturally aspirated V10 engine of the R8 alive for as long as possible, and an extreme version with more power could be a way of keeping it relevant before the next-generation model moves to an electric powertrain.

The most powerful Audi R8 currently in production is the customer racing car R8 GT2, which produces 640 CV from a modified version of the 5.2-litre V10 engine. The supercar, which was revealed at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, shares approximately 55% of its internal components with the car that may be on its way.

The four-ring brand made extensive use of the Nordschleife circuit when developing the Audi R8, and once held the lap record with an electric car, specifically the limited-production Audi R8 e-tron, so it is no stranger to the legendary German circuit.

The lack of a similar patent application in the United States may suggest that the future customer racing car from the German brand, the Audi R8 Green Hell, could be intended solely for Europe. This could be the case if the carmaker ultimately decides to produce a vehicle with this spectacular name. The name alone makes you want to drive it!

However, it should be noted that it is not uncommon for manufacturers to register trademarks for names that never appear on a car. We would love to have more details about this spectacular supercar. Who knows, it could even be a farewell model for the combustion engine. Whatever it is, we will have to wait to learn more.
