Alfa Romeo backtracks: the Giulia and Stelvio are delayed to 2028

Alfa Romeo had planned two major launches, as it intended to release the updated Giulia and Stelvio between late 2025 and early 2026. However, the Italian brand has just announced that it will change its plans and delay the commercialisation of these two models until 2028.

What has caused this major change of plans for the Stellantis brand? Apparently, it is the need to keep offering different propulsion systems, beyond the electric motors originally planned for these models. The idea is to offer all available engine options, so the company has to rethink the entire development process of the two models.

This change will mean that all platforms will have to be redesigned to suit traditional propulsion methods, which will be reintroduced into the Italian brand’s range. Sources within the company warn that these changes will not only affect Alfa Romeo, but that the rest of the Stellantis brands will also have to adjust their features to meet this challenge.

Unfulfilled expectations regarding electric car sales have led to a return to internal combustion engines. Furthermore, European Union legislation has changed, and 2035 no longer marks the end of the sale of vehicles with combustion engines, but rather a 90% reduction in polluting emissions.

Although the future of Alfa Romeo was initially expected to be electric, it will now need other features to continue offering combustion engines. The platform chosen for this seems to be the STL Large, and the engines used will apparently be the 3.0-litre twin-turbo Hurricane that equips the Dodge Charger. However, it is still unclear whether this will be the case, and we will have to wait for more information about the brand’s future plans.
