BMW puts the golden finishing touch on the end of production of its i3

The popular BMW i3 bids farewell after nearly 10 years on the market, saying goodbye with a limited edition of just 18 units with a very special look

As we discussed earlier this year, the first production electric vehicle from the Bavarian brand bids farewell after more than 250,000 units sold since it was launched back in 2013, becoming a true icon of the brand, which at the time was a benchmark in its segment.

As it could not be otherwise, BMW has decided to launch a final special edition of the model to complete production of this compact, limited to just 18 units with a body in Galvanic Gold metallic paint as a nod to this golden finishing touch.

Gold and black take the lead

The eye-catching golden colour contrasts with many details along the bodywork, such as the bonnet, pillars and roof, waistline, tailgate and bumpers, which have been painted in metallic black, as have its new 20-inch wheels and fine spokes.

Inside, the new special edition adds several exclusive details, such as sports seats upholstered in grey and blue fabric with blue stitching and integrated headrests.

Major changes over these 9 years

Over its nine years on the market, the BMW i3 has faced numerous challenges to remain an attractive option, such as its battery, which started at 21.6 kWh and was increased in its latest update to 42.2 kWh, allowing it to reach a range of 310 kilometres.

Without a doubt, the i3 has not been an electric vehicle suitable for every budget, due to the complexity of its construction in carbon fibre, which allowed it to reduce weight to achieve greater efficiency, while proportionally increasing the final price.

From BMW, they highlighted the importance of this model in their transition towards electric mobility, and stated: “At the start of its series production eight and a half years ago, it was considered a visionary and exotic vehicle. Since then, this electrically powered compact has established itself as a pioneer in the pleasure of emission-free driving.”

For those wondering whether there will be a successor to this model, the answer is yes, and the one tasked with it will be the BMW iX1, the mid-size SUV with a 64.7 kWh battery and a range of up to 438 kilometres according to the WLTP cycle.
