Bosch presents a new start-stop system that works while the vehicle is in motion

The start-stop systems we know so far only work when the car is stationary. As you all know, the idea is to switch off the engine during long idling periods, so that the least possible amount of fuel is consumed and a good number of emissions are also avoided. However, Bosch now presents a system that does the same thing, but when the car is travelling at high speed.
This system switches off the engine when the car is in motion, letting it coast on momentum alone. This will be very useful on slopes or when we are braking as we approach a red light, since the engine will not be needed to propel the vehicle and therefore no fuel is consumed at all. As soon as the driver touches the accelerator or brake pedal, the engine restarts.
According to tests carried out by Bosch, it is estimated that 30% of the fuel we use on a journey is burned unnecessarily on stretches of road where propulsion from the powertrain is not even needed. In real traffic conditions and in cities, the real saving could be around 10%, according to the tests. Combined with a hybrid powertrain, this saving approaches 25%.
What is interesting is that the new system requires very few components and can be fitted to any vehicle, regardless of the type of fuel it uses. Bosch uses special sensors that determine when the engine should stop, as well as modifying the starter motor to offer faster restarting and greater resistance to engine loads. In addition, the energy lost during braking can be converted into a 48-volt battery and serve as a store of energy to be used at every engine start; this stored energy can also be used by the engine itself when accelerating, providing somewhat more torque and acceleration.
