BYD has already opened 5,000

This new network of BYD charging stations allows users to complete a charge in record time, thanks to the spectacular maximum power delivered, which reaches 1.5 megawatts.

BYD is revolutionizing the electric vehicle charging experience in the Chinese market, offering a charging power that few expected. Its Flash Charging network is generating so much enthusiasm for the charging times it makes possible that many already compare it to traditional petrol stations for combustion-engine vehicles. It is fast, simple and free of complications.

Far from being a long-term project, this technology is already being rolled out on a large scale in China. Just one month after presenting its second-generation Flash chargers, BYD already has 5,000 operational stations with these new charging points in this Asian country. According to the company, these stations already extend across 297 Chinese cities, which makes clear BYD’s commitment to ultra-rapid charging.

The future plans of the Chinese manufacturer are, however, much more ambitious. The Flash Charging China initiative envisages the installation of 20,000 of these stations before the end of this year, 2026. Of these, 18,000 will be commercial points developed in collaboration with other local charging network operators. Although it is therefore not a solo deployment, the speed at which BYD is expanding its ultra-rapid charging network deserves to be highlighted.

Higher charging power than the European MCS stations for electric trucks

Flash chargers stand out for delivering an impressive charging power of up to 1.5 megawatts, far above the 350 kW commonly seen today at the most advanced European charging stations. In this way, electric models equipped with BYD’s new Blade 2.0 battery can increase their state of charge from 10 to 97 percent in just 9 minutes. A time that already comes quite close to what is needed to fill the tank of a conventional combustion-engine vehicle.

The company’s strategy now focuses on concentrating these stations in high-traffic areas and strategic corridors, with the aim of offering these ultra-rapid charging points every 100 kilometres on the country’s main motorways. As a curious fact, to meet the goal of having 20,000 of these stations before the end of the year, BYD will need to add around 1,600 of them to its network each month. Quite a pace!

This rate of deployment recalls the beginnings of the Tesla Supercharger network in North America and Europe. Like that pioneering infrastructure, Flash Charging not only represents a technological leap in fast charging, but also a notable improvement in the quality of life of electric vehicle owners.

If the Tesla network helped consolidate the brand as a viable option for the general public, the momentum of Flash Charging could give BYD a significant competitive advantage in the fiercely contested Chinese market. And not only there, since the company has announced its intention to bring its advanced ultra-rapid charging points to markets beyond China.
