Discover the Bugatti EB110 SS, a 1993 prototype capable of taking on the Chiron
It was one of the great cars of the French brand during the 1990s, although only 193 units were built, of which just 36 were SS versions

As this 2018 gets underway, the supercar catalogue is certainly not small. We find very spectacular cars and among all those brands with supercars that dazzle us and make us dream is Bugatti. This brand, specialised in these fantastic cars, is not exactly new and has many models in its past that were, in their day, some of the great cars that breathed power and performance. The Bugatti EB110 SS was one of those cars and today we want to remember it.
Only 139 units of this prototype were made, and of those, only 36 were SS variants, the most powerful and spectacular. The exterior is a child of its time, 1993, and reflects much of the design language found in that decade, indebted to the style of the 1980s, while already seeking a refinement that has led to the design of its current cars.

This version raised the 550 CV of the GT version to 604 CV, something truly outstanding for the era, but which falls well short of the power offered by the company’s current models, such as the Veyron or the more recent Chiron. But there is something that makes this model potentially more intense than the new ones: the total weight of the EB110 SS was much lower than that of today’s supercars.

The difference could be put at some 435 kg below today’s supercars. The Veyron weighs 1,860 kg, while the Chiron weighs 1,995 kg. This supercar from the 1990s was rated at 1,497 kg, so the power delivered by the V12 engine with four turbos and 3.5 litres amounts to 179 CV per litre, a figure that, although it does not exceed the Chiron’s, which offers 1,479 CV, does sit above that of the Veyron.

The Bugatti EB110 SS could go up against its contemporary siblings, despite the obvious technological gap, which is a serious handicap for achieving good results in other areas such as performance and consumption. Still, if you want to check for yourself, you have the chance: on 7 February the unit shown in the image will be auctioned, and it is expected to fetch between 850,000 and 1.1 million euros. Will you be able to see for yourself?
