First details emerge of Xpeng's new large SUV, the G7

The Chinese manufacturer Xpeng, in collaboration with Volkswagen, is preparing to expand its range of electric SUVs with the G7, a new model whose market launch is scheduled for the first half of 2025. As has happened many times before, the mandatory registration with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, popularly known by its acronym MIIT, has allowed us to learn the main details of this new vehicle.

So now we know that the G7 will be the largest electric SUV in Xpeng’s lineup, at almost 4.9 metres long, 1.93 metres wide and 1.66 metres tall. Its wheelbase, on the other hand, is 2.89 metres. That is eleven centimetres less than the Xpeng G9, the manufacturer’s flagship, which leads us to think that its interior space will also be smaller. It is possible, however, that it will compensate for this shorter wheelbase with a larger boot, although for the time being it is unknown whether this will actually be the case.

In China, manufacturers are required to publish the main technical specifications of models they wish to start selling in advance, so that consumers can compare them with rival models already on sale. This step is crucial before the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) approves the model’s sale in the country. The data for the Xpeng G7 was published on 10 January, so the Chinese manufacturer could begin officially selling this electric SUV shortly.

What else do we know about the Xpeng G7?

Xpeng has registered two variants of the G7 with Chinese authorities, both with an output of 218 kW. It is also known that production of this electric SUV will be carried out by an Xpeng subsidiary in Wuhan, and that it will use LFP cells supplied by CALB. For now, however, the capacity of its battery pack is unknown. In any case, given the notable weight difference between the two versions of the G7, it seems clear that this electric SUV will be available with two battery packs of different capacities. The entry-level version with 18-inch wheels weighs 2,085 kilograms on the scale, compared with 2,145 kilograms for the top version.

As for pricing, the G7 is estimated to cost around 200,000 yuan, which at the current exchange rate is worth a little under 27,000 euros. A fairly competitive price considering the vehicle’s luxury features. This strategy of setting a not-too-high selling price has worked well with the manufacturer’s earlier models, such as the Mona M03 and the P7+.
