Great Tang: the new flagship of BYD's SUV segment goes on sale in China

The Great Tang combines space, exceptional range, cutting-edge technology and dynamic performance, establishing BYD as a dominant player in China’s competitive premium electric vehicle market.

BYD has begun selling the Great Tang in its domestic market, a seven-seat premium electric SUV that becomes the new flagship of the Dynasty series from the Chinese manufacturer, alongside the Great Han luxury saloon. With a length of 5.26 metres, this model stands out for its generous dimensions and premium focus, offering four versions priced between 239,900 and 309,900 yuan. At the current exchange rate, that works out to roughly 35,500 to 39,800 euros.

The mechanical options include an entry-level rear-wheel-drive version with up to 800 km of CLTC range, and another with the same drive layout reaching 950 km. In addition, two all-wheel-drive versions with 850 km of range are offered, differing mainly in their equipment. All of them use BYD’s new 1,000-volt electrical architecture and the second generation of Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with capacities of 105.7 or 130.1 kWh. This makes ultra-rapid charging possible, reaching 97 per cent charge from 10 per cent in just nine minutes.

Meanwhile, the powertrains deliver between 300 and 370 kW in the single-motor rear-wheel-drive versions, and up to 585 kW combined in the all-wheel-drive models. Top speed is 250 km/h.

Among the Great Tang’s most advanced features are the dual-chamber air suspension with 100 mm of ride-height adjustment and predictive chassis control, and rear-axle steering – with up to 7 degrees of steering angle – that reduces the turning circle to 5.2 metres and enables the Crab Walk mode, or diagonal driving. In terms of safety and driver assistance, it comes as standard with the God’s Eye 5.0 system, featuring a roof-mounted LiDAR, capable of autonomous driving in urban environments and on highways.

Great Tang and Great Han: the new flagships of BYD

BYD unveiled the Great Tang in April at the Beijing Auto Show, recording 150,000 reservations within a few days. Demand has been so strong that the brand has had to postpone the launch twice to ensure production capacity. As we recently reported here at HighMotor, shortly after the Great Tang’s launch, the Great Han luxury saloon will also arrive on the Chinese market, sharing much of its innovative technology.

With these models, BYD strengthens its premium range, completing a well-structured product lineup alongside its luxury brands Denza and Yangwang. The Tang and the Han have historically been the models that brought great prestige to the BYD brand, and with the new Great Tang and Great Han the Chinese manufacturer moves up to an even higher tier.
