Hyundai E-GMP: this is the new platform for electrifying its models

Hyundai’s new platform for its future electric models offers better performance, interior space and safety for the cars to come.

The manufacturing of electric cars is based on the infrastructure available to shape the models to be developed. This infrastructure starts from the platform on which each car is mounted. It is where brands have worked to establish that physical stage on which the different models to be developed are built.

The E-GMP platform is the new base on which several electric car models from Hyundai will be developed. The differences this platform presents allow greater flexibility when developing new models, but also the incorporation of technologies that improve the driving experience, more safety, greater interior space and more range.

Regarding the location of the batteries, this platform allows placing the batteries in the floor, which frees up a lot of interior space for both occupants and luggage. In addition, this position allows greater stability of the car and more grip in corners thanks to the low centre of gravity. The wheelbase helps create interior space and improve the characteristics of the cabin.

Safety is increased thanks to the presence of an ultra-high-strength steel structure to guarantee the integrity of the battery, which is reinforced by the addition of hot-stamped steel components. The platform allows the stress suffered by the bodywork to be transferred very efficiently and offers greater safety for the occupants.

The Hyundai platform uses a new compact electric propulsion system, which includes a motor, EV transmission and inverter. The three components are integrated into a single compact module, which ensures higher performance and optimal efficiency in terms of space and weight. The motor is controlled by a power inverter module, which uses silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors. Rear-wheel drive is predominant on the E-GMP platform, although there will also be an all-wheel-drive configuration.

Regarding the charging architecture, this platform offers the possibility of using 400 V and 800 V charging systems without having to add extras. The range offered by the platform is up to 500 kilometres in WLTP mode and it can recover up to 80% of the battery capacity in just 18 minutes.
