Mazda and its rotary engine: this is how it will extend the range of its electric cars

Mazda will launch two electric cars in 2020, one of which will incorporate an additional rotary engine to recharge the electric battery when it runs out of energy.

Mazda is taking its first steps towards electrifying its range of models. As part of its “Zoom-Zoom Sustainable 2030” strategic plan, the Japanese company has announced that it will launch two electric cars in 2020. The first of these vehicles will be 100% electric, while the second will be a hybrid and will use a rotary engine to extend its range.

Regarding the hybrid model, Mazda states that the rotary engine will recharge the electric battery when the car runs out of energy, which will help reduce the main concern of electrified cars, the so-called “range anxiety”.

“The compact dimensions of the rotary engine and its high power output make multiple electrification technology solutions possible through a shared structure. Taking advantage of the rotary engine’s compatibility with gaseous fuels, the range-extending system is also designed to burn liquefied natural gas and provide a source of electricity in emergency situations,” says Mazda.

“Zoom-Zoom Sustainable 2030”

The electrification plan of Mazda, “Zoom-Zoom Sustainable 2030”, envisages a 50% reduction in global CO2 emissions produced by its vehicles by 2030 (compared with 2010 figures).

Electrification yes, but without neglecting the traditional route

Despite its commitment to electrification, Mazda states that it will continue optimising the efficiency of its internal combustion engines, since the availability of electrified cars and the suitability of energy sources (charging points) for the car vary in each region”.
