Mazda MX-30: the brand's first electric vehicle is inspired by the iconic RX-8
Mazda used the Tokyo Motor Show to unveil the new MX-30, its first 100% electric model, which offers a range of 200 kilometres.

The world is changing and so is the automotive sector, with electric vehicles being a clear reflection of this development. Mazda has always presented itself as a brand deeply committed to caring for the environment but, at the same time, with a great deal of personality. We see this in its ability to offer low emissions while still relying on naturally aspirated engines. However, the Japanese firm has wanted to go further, something made possible by the presentation of the MX-30, its first 100% electric model, which takes its inspiration from the iconic RX-8.
Beyond its electric powertrain and futuristic styling, you will surely also notice its name. The prefix MX has been part of the Japanese house’s vocabulary since the late 1980s thanks to the MX-5, a small two-seat sports car that has won our hearts more than once. Although the concept of the MX-30 has nothing to do with that of the MX-5, there is one thing that links both models: their capacity to revolutionise an idea that has long been established in the automotive sector.
A futuristic style that remains true to its principles
Mazda has used the launch of the new MX-30 not only to anticipate a new design language, but also to show the direction its electric vehicles will follow. Despite the clear innovations applied to this Japanese crossover, we can still appreciate the essence of the brand, which aims to make clear where the MX-30’s DNA comes from.

The front is dominated by a very fine grille in which the Mazda logo and slim, elongated headlights are the only features. The rest of the front end is completely closed off except for the bumper, which features air intakes designed to cool certain mechanical components.
But it is at the side that Mazda has wanted to highlight both its care for the heritage of its past models and the Kodo design language. This is achieved through unprecedented minimalism and the presence of rear-hinged rear doors, known as suicide doors, which not only make access to the second row of seats easier but also evoke the Mazda RX-8, one of the Japanese firm’s most beloved models.
A 35.5 kWh battery and a range of 200 kilometres
But setting style and design aside, let us focus on the mechanical side of the new Mazda MX-30. To begin with, the Japanese firm has been rather reserved on this front, so we know very little about the heart of this electric SUV.
For now we know that beneath its skin lies a 35.5 kWh battery capable of producing around 140 CV of power. Alongside this figure, there is a range of 200 kilometres, a distance with which Mazda claims it will be possible to cover all everyday journeys.

At the same time, thanks to the new Mazda MX-30’s compatibility with 50 kW chargers, the MX-30 will be ready to drive again after a charging time of 40 minutes. The starting price of Mazda’s first electric car remains unknown, but orders are already open and it will reach the market over the course of next year.
