Mazda MX-5: now with over 200 CV thanks to BBR
The Mazda MX-5 undergoes a series of modifications by BBR. By fitting a turbo and modifying the ECU, the MX-5 now delivers 213 CV.

When we think of a sports car, we tend to associate it with high performance and astronomical prices. But the truth is that today we can find cars with a sporty philosophy without having to resort to high-flying models. In this group we must highlight the Mazda MX-5, one of the most sporty and beloved vehicles since its launch in the early nineties. But now the tuner BBR has set out to take the small Miata to a much higher level.
There are many positive aspects that an MX-5 offers and car enthusiasts know it well. It meets every requirement for a great drive, with a naturally aspirated engine, rear-wheel drive, low weight and an excellent weight distribution. But if there is one thing that has been criticised about the small Japanese sports car over the years, it is, without a doubt, its power.
Mazda is aware of this, but the concept of the Miata has always focused on fun through the bends thanks to how light it is. The sports car delivers an enviable power-to-weight ratio, but BBR has considered that a more radical MX-5 would also be a good idea. The patient chosen for this intervention is the Miata 1.5, which produces 131 CV as standard.

BBR had already had the chance to modify the most powerful version of the MX-5, but now they wanted to work with the entry-level variant, from which they have managed to extract a very respectable 213 CV. To achieve this feat, the tuner’s team has installed a TSX28-67R twin-scroll turbo and the Miata’s ECU has been modified, with the aim of achieving greater efficiency from the modifications.
The torque the engine delivers also rises considerably, going from the standard 150 Nm to 267 Nm. This provides a considerable improvement to the Mazda MX-5, both in performance and in fun. It is true that the Miata loses the charm of naturally aspirated engines, but it gains in many other areas, which move the Japanese sports car up a step. For now, official performance data is unknown, but it will surely manage a 0-100 time close to six seconds.

For many, this modification is something they have been waiting for a long time, even though the MX-5 is a unique vehicle as it leaves the factory. But this installation has a price, which starts at €5,668, something that would considerably increase the outlay required to buy a new MX-5, although it will surely be worth it.
