MG Marvel R: range and prices of the electric SUV that aims to take on the VW ID.4

Unapologetic, flaunting eye-catching design and the latest technology, MG wants to revolutionise the electric SUV segment with the MG Marvel R. We already saw it at MOGY, the sustainability fair held recently in Madrid. And we can assure you that in person it has even more presence than it conveys in photos.

We also learned the main features of the Marvel R when MG unveiled the first images and technical data. Now, the British brand, which is owned by the powerful Chinese group BAIC, has revealed more details, confirming the range and prices for Europe. And among its most direct rivals we find, no less than, the Volkswagen ID.4, set to be a bestseller.

Two or three motors, power of 180 CV or 288 CV.

The MG Marvel R range is configured with two mechanical versions. The entry level features two electric motors on the rear axle, which deliver a combined power of 180 CV and a maximum torque of 410 Nm. For the more powerful version a third motor is used, which drives the front wheels, thus providing all-wheel drive. In this case the power rises to 288 CV, with 665 Nm of torque.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in the first case is 7.9 seconds, and the tri-motor variant cuts this figure by no less than three seconds, stopping the clock at 4.9 seconds.

Regardless of the mechanical configuration, the battery always has a capacity of 70 kWh, which gives the Marvel R a range of 402 km for the rear-wheel-drive, two-motor version, or 370 km in the case of the three-motor, all-wheel-drive variant. Both come with an 11 kW three-phase charger as standard, and accept DC charging at a maximum of 92 kW, enough to claim charging times of half an hour to go from 30% to 80% battery capacity, or just over 40 minutes starting from 5%.

Technologically the MG Marvel R is on a par with the best cars in the segment, with details such as fork-wound motors or the battery configuration without modules to increase energy density and save weight. It even comes as standard with V2L functionality, which allows energy to be supplied to an external electrical device, for example to recharge a scooter or even another electric car.

Range and prices of the MG Marvel R: from 39,990 euros

With all these details, the surprising thing about the MG Marvel R is its price. Although it has not yet been confirmed that these will apply to the Spanish market, MG has revealed the recommended retail prices in Europe, before any possible purchase incentives such as the Moves Plan. They are as follows:

• MG Marvel R Comfort: 39,990 euros
• MG Marvel R Luxury: 43,990 euros
• MG Marvel R Performance: 47,990 euros

For the time being these prices cannot be confirmed, nor can the car be configured on the MG website for Spain, although you can request information by completing a form to be among the first to be able to reserve it. What the website does detail is the main equipment of each version. And from the Comfort trim onwards it includes details such as 18-inch wheels, the heat pump, the panoramic roof or the electric tailgate.

The Luxury variant adds 19-inch wheels, a foot-gesture sensor for opening the tailgate, sports seats upholstered in leather with heating in the front seats, a 360-degree camera and an ambient lighting system. The Performance trim is reserved exclusively for the most powerful version with three motors, and adds to the Luxury equipment a sound system signed by BOSE.

All MG Marvel R models come with the MG iSmart multimedia system, which integrates a 12.3-inch digital display for the instrumentation and an impressive 19.4-inch multimedia screen positioned vertically. It includes the now-usual features, such as a wifi hotspot, wireless phone charging and connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it relies on Amazon Web services to deliver online updates.

In addition, from the base version the MG Marvel R comes with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping system, rear traffic alert, fatigue detector, automatic high beams and blind-spot detection.

By way of comparison, a VW ID.3 with a 170 CV motor and 52 kWh battery is priced from 39,000 euros, while the 204 CV version with a 77 kWh battery starts at 46,000 euros, and the ID.4 GTX with all-wheel drive and 299 CV costs 50,700 euros.
