New Jaguar F-PACE 2021: finally with electrified engines!

Jaguar thoroughly renews the F-PACE, which, in addition to design changes and many connectivity improvements, finally incorporates electrified engines, both mild hybrid petrol and diesel versions as well as a plug-in hybrid.

The new Jaguar F-PACE 2021 is now on sale, with prices starting from 59,999 euros for the entry-level version of the range, the 2.0 turbodiesel with 163 CV in standard trim.

The new update to the F-PACE, which was launched in 2016 and received a first refresh in 2019, affects all areas: exterior design, interior, multimedia systems and connectivity, driver assistance and engine range. For the first time, the English SUV includes something it needed to compete on equal terms with its rivals: electrified versions, with the ECO and ZERO environmental labels from the DGT.

The exterior and interior design of the new Jaguar F-PACE

Aesthetically, the new Jaguar F-PACE has been streamlined, although at first glance it may seem to have few changes. These are the usual updates in such cases, to refresh its image. The bumpers, front bonnet and tailgate, and the grille are all new… There are also four new wheel designs among the 12 to choose from, ranging from 18 to 21 inches. The headlights now feature new Pixel LED technology, which provide brighter and better lighting.

Jaguar incorporates in the interior an endless range of materials and combinations of trim and upholstery that aim to give the F-PACE an even more sophisticated feel. Details such as the speaker grilles with laser-etched patterns, the ribbed metallic finish on all rotary selectors, or the new design of the gear selector stand out. The control knob for the JaguarDrive system is also new.

Other interior novelties include the ambient lighting system with 10 colours, the sophisticated active noise cancellation system, and the cabin air ionisation system, capable of removing particles and allergens. The design of the steering wheels and seats is also new.

Yet the interior holds deeper changes, most notably the new multimedia system screen, for two reasons. Firstly, because of its features: a curved 11.4-inch high-definition screen, with two anti-reflective layers and a special anti-fingerprint coating. Secondly, because, at least judging from the images, the screen looks like an “add-on” placed over the dashboard so that it wouldn’t have to be entirely redesigned and integrated.

More connected, more technological

The most interesting point is that the new infotainment system, called Pivi Pro, is controlled through this screen. According to Jaguar, it allows 90% of possible tasks to be carried out from the home menu with just two taps on the screen, making navigation through the menus much faster and more intuitive.

With a dual SIM card installed in the vehicle and LTE data transmission speeds, the F-PACE also improves all connectivity services. It now allows remote background updates that are safer and faster, without the need to visit the dealership. Wireless charging and dual Bluetooth, which allows two mobile phones to be connected at the same time, also arrive.

Another notable point is the digital instrument cluster, with a large 12.3-inch fully configurable screen, which allows a full-screen 3D navigation mode.

As for driver assistance systems, the clear exit monitor is particularly interesting, as it warns of the presence of other vehicles or cyclists when opening the doors. The peripheral camera and the driver condition monitor, which detects drowsiness or fatigue, complete a very comprehensive offering.

To finish with connectivity, the arrival of the second generation of the Jaguar activity key must also be mentioned. It keeps the water-resistant wristband format of the first, but now includes a watch and a battery life of 7 days between charges. And the Jaguar Remote app, with functions specific to the new plug-in hybrid version, has a “Guardian” mode that issues an alert if the vehicle starts up during hours when, in theory, it should be inactive.

The engines of the new Jaguar F-PACE: hybrids arrive

For the first time, the F-PACE includes electrified engines, with Mild Hybrid MHEV light hybridisation technology, as well as a plug-in hybrid.

All diesel versions now use 48-volt MHEV technology, so they carry the DGT ECO environmental label. There are three choices. On one hand, two variants with 163 and 204 CV from the 2.0 Diesel Ingenium 4-cylinder engine, and on the other, the 3.0 V6 with standard twin variable-geometry turbochargers, producing 300 CV. All three are paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive as standard.

The petrol engine range includes two versions: a 4-cylinder 2.0 with 250 CV, and the 3.0 V6 with 400 CV. The first is the only one without mild hybridisation, which the most powerful V6 does have. Like the diesels, these engines are likewise turbocharged and come with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive.

The line-up is completed by the Jaguar F-PACE PHEV plug-in hybrid, which combines the 2.0 petrol engine with a 105 kW electric motor, delivering a system output of 404 CV and a maximum torque of 640 Nm. With a 17.1 kWh battery housed under the boot floor, it is rated for an electric-only range of 53 km, and a consumption figure from 2.4 l/100 km. It therefore qualifies for the DGT ZERO emissions label.

For a plug-in hybrid, where the maximum charging power is typically around 7 kW, the F-PACE PHEV supports fast DC charging of up to 32 kW. In this case, the battery reaches 80% of its capacity in half an hour, whereas a domestic socket at 2.3 kW takes five and a half hours, and around an hour and 40 minutes with a 7 kW wallbox.

In addition to being the most powerful and most fuel-efficient F-PACE, the PHEV is also the fastest: it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds, a tenth faster than the 400 CV petrol V6. Drivers can choose between the three driving modes common in this type of car: EV or electric; Hybrid, which automatically combines both motors and takes route data from the navigation system into account to operate predictively; and Save, to preserve battery charge for later use.

As with the petrol and diesel versions, the list price of the Jaguar F-PACE PHEV is clearly higher than its most direct alternatives. Here it starts from 73,000 euros. For reference, the Volvo XC60 T6 Recharge is available from 60,000 euros, and a BMW X3 xDrive 30e starts from 61,000 euros.
