Porsche patents a bumper that would reduce possible serious injuries to pedestrians. More and more technologies are focusing on pedestrian safety. We are talking about pedestrian detection systems and automatic emergency braking, yet a large number of pedestrians still suffer some kind of impact.

Now, the Stuttgart brand has wanted to go further and has designed a bumper that minimises the risk of serious injury or even death. A specialist source has uncovered Porsche’s patent, which will raise safety and reduce the severity of pedestrian injuries.

This is the new patent registered by Porsche

The new patent, filed with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office, describes a “device for the front of a vehicle” that relates to the bumper and possible front spoilers. Essentially, Porsche explains in the document how bumper configurations can injure a pedestrian, but its new design will allow the spoiler to move when it comes into contact with a pedestrian.

“The front of the vehicle has a front spoiler, characterised in that the device comprises a push body and an activation element for triggering a movement of the push body, where the push body is held in an initial position by a locking device, in which, in the event of a collision of the vehicle with a body, the activation element can be moved in such a way that it moves in the direction of travel of the vehicle so that the activation element acts on the locking device”.

Although the explanation is somewhat confusing, the essence of the patent is very simple. If the section of the front bumper changes shape when a collision occurs, the angle of impact on the body changes and, therefore, the effect on specific joints and ligaments also changes. Porsche has also explained that the strain on the lower body and the pedestrian’s knees can be reduced during impact.

Likewise, the Stuttgart brand says the design could be particularly useful if applied to an SUV such as the Porsche Macan. We believe it is worth investing in this kind of technology that increases pedestrian safety. What do you think of the German brand’s new safety patent?
