SsangYong is changing its name: from now on it will be called KGM

The South Korean brand SsangYong, specialised in the production of off-road vehicles and SUVs, will from now on be renamed KGM following its acquisition by the KG Group.

The KG Group, which holds 61% of the shares of the former SsangYong, specialises in various industrial sectors, such as steel, chemicals, financial technology, consulting, education, media and leisure, as well as the new mobility division, which is the reason behind the brand’s new name.

The new company’s initial plan is to reach 320,000 units in 2027, almost tripling sales, with notable growth in the European market, going from the 23,000 units sold in 2023 to 35,000 units in 2024 and reaching 70,000 by 2027. This will be accompanied by an interesting product plan with significant new additions.

After almost 70 years of history, beginning with the production of the first Korando (Korean Can Do), the brand SsangYong has collaborated with Daimler (1991), SAIC (2004), and Mahindra since 2011. In Spain it has marked 30 years and has managed to sell more than 90,000 units since its beginnings.

Sustained growth

In Spain the brand expects to reach a 0.6% market share this year, going from the 3,200 units registered in 2023 to 6,000 units this year, supported by a strong dealer network with 56 dealerships, 71 sales points and 84 workshops.

For now, the brand focuses on SUV and pick-up models: Tivoli and Tivoli Grand, Korando, Torres and Rexton; the 4×4 pick-up Musso and, shortly, the electric version of the Torres, which will be called KGB Torres EVX, and the Torres pick-up, also battery-powered.

By 2026 the arrival of a mid-size SUV and another larger one with an ECO label is expected, although no details of their technical specifications have yet been revealed.
