Stellantis teams up with Hype to deploy 50 hydrogen taxis designed for people with disabilities

These taxis are not only powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, but are also designed for people with reduced mobility, with a view to 2024.

The sustainable mobility is becoming increasingly visible in large cities and is being applied to various vehicles to make getting around the city cleaner. The taxi sector is one of the most important, given its presence in the city, so there are many possibilities for them. Hydrogen is a fuel that can make a fairly big difference, and if it can be applied to users with reduced mobility, it becomes even more attractive.

Stellantis has teamed up with Hype, a company that develops hydrogen-powered drivetrains, and together they have begun the process of deploying up to 50 units powered by this fuel and intended for taxi service in Paris. These sustainable taxis are also prepared to carry people with reduced mobility.

These first 50 hydrogen taxis adapted for users with reduced mobility are called Crit’Air 0 and will be ready throughout 2023. They are units of the Citroën ë-Jumpy and the Peugeot e-Expert. They are designed to be recharged in just three minutes and would have a range of 400 kilometres. A figure that would allow them to complete an intensive service shift without having to recharge every so often.

The vehicles have a hydrogen fuel cell, but also a battery that stores electricity, so they can run on both hydrogen and the electricity stored in it. The intention of the two companies is to put a fleet of up to 1,000 taxis with these characteristics into service in Paris by 2024.

To do so, they must comply with the Parisian Taxi PMR licence, which is being managed by the French authorities. The deployment of these sustainable vehicles will coincide with the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024, so the objectives of this public service for users with reduced mobility will be met.

They will also move forward with the introduction of sustainable taxis and the reinforcement of Stellantis’ Hordain plant. Following the deployment of these vehicles in Paris, it is expected that other destinations can be reached and that they will be introduced first in other towns in France and then in the rest of Europe.
