Subaru Solterra, this is the new electric crossover designed together with Toyota

The brand has collaborated with Toyota to launch this electric vehicle, which shares many similarities with the bZX4 but will have its own personality.

Subaru and Toyota have collaborated once again to present an electric vehicle designed to offer good urban mobility, but also with off-road capabilities. Among the collaborations between the two brands, several generations of the Subaru BRZ and the sports coupé GR86 stand out. Now they present the first electric vehicle intended for the global market, the Subaru Solterra.

As expected, the Solterra looks quite similar to the Toyota bZX4, although it has some aesthetic differences to justify the change of brand. These are marked by the rear lights, shaped like tongs; the front bumper, which gives way to a closed grille that signals its place in the electric range; and the fog lights, which have a different design. And, of course, the logos, which are different.

The interior is also meant to be identical, although the differentiation is expected to be noticeable in other elements. The use of materials and colours will be decisive in setting the two models apart. It is important to remember that both models, the Toyota bZX4 and the Solterra, are still considered prototypes, although in reality they are almost ready for production.

They are expected to have slight changes designed to adapt to local markets, but most elements are ready for production.

Dimensions and features

The Subaru Solterra has a length of 4,690 millimetres; a width of 1,860 millimetres and a height of 1,650 millimetres. The wheelbase is 2,850 millimetres. These dimensions bring it fairly close to the Subaru Forester.

As for drive configuration, it will be available with two powertrains. The first will feature a front-mounted motor delivering 150 kW, equivalent to 204 CV. The two-motor version, with one motor on each axle, achieves a combined output of 160 kW, which represents 215 CV.

As for the battery, we know that in the Japanese market it will have a 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. In the front-wheel-drive version this battery offers a range of 530 kilometres, and 460 kilometres in the case of the all-wheel-drive version. This model will reach the international market in 2022, and we will soon have more information about the local versions in America and Europe.
