The Ferrari 488 hybrid could be hiding behind this silent video

Ferrari is preparing something new under the skin of the 488 GTB, since this video shows us the possible hybrid variant of the Italian supercar.

If there is one thing that defines supercars, it is undoubtedly their spectacular sound, a melody that enchants every motoring enthusiast. However, within this fascinating world of high-performance vehicles we can find all kinds of powertrains, with all kinds of cylinders, turbos, naturally aspirated engines and even hybrids and electric cars. Ferrari, one of the brands that best masters the art of sound, hides a silent secret beneath this 488 test car.

As is customary within the Prancing Horse brand, the engines for its range of vehicles have 8 and 12 cylinders respectively and, until not long ago, all of them were naturally aspirated. Ferrari focused on offering turbo versions of its V8 engine, and the 488 GTB was one of the first supercars from the Italian house to incorporate it, something that would help considerably improve its performance over its predecessor, the 458 Italia.

Something we also eagerly awaited was the arrival of the most radical version of the 488, which was unveiled less than a month ago at the Geneva Motor Show under the name Pista. The tuning of this model allows it to face off directly against the Lamborghini Huracán Performante and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, however, the Italian firm is preparing something more.

It is true that hybridization is not new in the most radical vehicles, since we have already seen it on Ferrari with the LaFerrari, one of the most iconic and fastest models ever created by the company. However, that car could not be driven in electric mode, something that seems to have changed in this possible variant of the 488. We can deduce this thanks to the video circulating on YouTube, since we can see the Prancing Horse moving forward in complete silence.

We rule out that it is a 100% electric model, since the test mule still retains intact the two characteristic cylindrical exhaust pipes of the 488 GTB. At the same time, Ferrari may want to gradually extend this type of powertrain to the other vehicles in the range, with the 488 being the ideal candidate to kick off this new era.

This possible variant will not only offer lower consumption than the V8, but will also considerably increase performance. We could be talking about a combined output approaching 700 CV, which would dangerously overshadow the Pista. Either way, this will be a very important step for the company, since it will be one of the first supercars to offer this combination.

For now we do not know official data from the brand but, without a doubt, everything points to the Ferrari 488 sharing its supercharged V8 engine with an electric motor. We will have to wait a while, but we expect to obtain statements from the Italian firm sooner than we think.
