The Ferrari California could get a turbo

Ferrari may be considering introducing turbocharged engines again in a few years for the California as the entry-level powertrain in the range. We take a brief look at this type of engine.

Over the last few months, both Ferrari and the luxury brands of the FIAT Group have been closely linked to the introduction of supercharged engines as entry-level powertrains, something we have already seen in the latest generation of the Maserati Quattroporte.

The next generation of the Ferrari California, scheduled for late 2014 or early 2015, is expected to arrive with two completely different powertrains. One is the well-known naturally aspirated V8, and the other would be the brand’s first turbo engine in a century. We are talking about a V6 or V8 with no more than 4.0 litres of displacement.

MOMENT OF REFLECTION

Why is there so much prejudice nowadays towards turbo or supercharged engines?

Manufacturers have started introducing them as a fuel-saving measure so they don’t have to sacrifice performance, but weren’t they, in previous decades when this type of engine first hit the market, synonymous with sportiness and fun?

The famous turbo kick, something that gets under your skin whether in petrol or diesel engines. That moment when you have no power at low revs, you keep pressing the accelerator, and then it suddenly kicks in and launches you forward like a bullet.

A naturally aspirated engine doesn’t give you that satisfaction; naturally aspirated blocks offer you other emotions or completely different sensations, many of them good.

Remember that for many car and engine enthusiasts, the greatest supersports cars of all time have owed their greatness to their turbos.
