The Ferrari F70 could weigh the same as a Mazda MX-5

The new Ferrari in development would weigh around 1,000 kilos, according to what Ferrari has been testing in order to make the new sports car the lightest in its segment.

Since the earliest days of the automobile, running with the lowest possible weight has been one of the goals of great tuners and a challenge for engineers. From Colin Chapman to the largest mass-market brands, passing through competition cars, everyone wants weight to be a minor factor in the equation.

Among those brands, none other than Ferrari could be missing, and it is rumoured that its next sports car will be an ode to low weight and the use of lighter materials. Specifically, it is said that the F70 (or F150 project, or successor to the Enzo) will be designed to weigh almost the same as a Mazda MX-5 or on the edge of 1,000 kilos.

The use of carbon fibre, aluminium and Kevlar will be the standout feature of the new Ferrari. As a point of reference, the carbon-fibre monocoque weighs no more than 70 kilos. Mechanically, the V12 will deliver approximately 730 horsepower, supported by an electric powertrain with another 100 horses available.

The weight figures we have given already include the powertrain, so it will be truly impressive to see the F150 in action, a hybrid that cares not a whit about emissions or fuel consumption, since the electric motor and KERS are coupled to add power rather than to save it. It will surely be a more than worthy rival to the McLaren P1.
