The iconic coupe model arrived in the European market for the first time in its history during the summer of last year. 50 years after the quintessential muscle car debuted in its home market, Europeans could finally enjoy a car as passionate as the legendary American model without having to resort to imported units.

During 2015, the Ford Mustang became the best-selling sports coupe in the world, according to registration data from IHS Automotive. The data confirm that the American brand sold almost 110,000 units of the closed-body variant, also known as the “fastback”.

It is surprising that the Mustang managed to sell so many units. It is true that it was already being sold in a large number of countries by the end of the year, but the first units that arrived in Europe did so during the month of August. Another very important market where the brand of the oval expects to achieve good sales figures is China, where the Ford Mustang also arrived with a good part of the year already gone.

In total for 2015, the Ford Mustang sold, in addition to the nearly 110,000 fastback units, some 30,000 units of the open-top variant, called the “convertible”. Between both body styles, more than 140,000 units of its star model were sold by the American manufacturer. In this way, it also becomes the best-selling two-door sports model in the world.

On the old continent, the waiting list to receive the Mustang is quite long. Since its launch, 16,600 customers have ordered a unit, although only 4,700 vehicles have already reached the hands of their lucky owners.

We remind you that the sixth-generation Ford Mustang is available both as a coupe and as a convertible. Furthermore, mechanically it is offered in Europe with the 5-litre V8 engine that delivers 421 horsepower at full revs, and the greener 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine with 321 horsepower. The most powerful version alongside the closed body is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, while the EcoBoost needs one second more. Both are available with either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
