The Lancia Ypsilon is diversifying even further: it will soon have pure combustion engines

Lancia sees that sales of the all-electric Lancia Ypsilon are not meeting expectations and hopes they will pick up with the hybrid engine, and it will launch a version with an ICE engine

One of the brands within Stellantis that has resurged and is positioning itself strongly over the past year has been Lancia. The Italian brand came close to disappearing, but it has been revitalised, and one of the models that has put it back on the automotive map has been the Lancia Ypsilon.

This compact B-segment was launched to be a battery-electric car, although demand led to it also being launched with a hybrid engine, which proved to be a good idea and boosted orders for the model. But this does not seem to be enough, and market conditions have led the brand to rethink its engine line-up, and it will soon offer a new version of the Ypsilon.

New combustion engines for the Ypsilon

Lancia’s own CEO, Roberta Zerbi, has announced that the brand’s compact will add a combustion engine to its range. The Ypsilon is also set to receive more equipment and features that will enhance the model and give buyers a wide variety of versions and trim levels to choose from.

This move is surprising, since the idea was for Lancia to become the option dedicated to electric mobility. However, orders for the electric and hybrid-powered Ypsilon are not what was expected, and there is strong demand for cars of this kind with traditional engines, and with manual gearboxes.

So Lancia’s whole strategy has changed for 2026. So much so that the roadmap only included the launch of one other model, the Gamma SUV. The electric Lancia Delta is scheduled to go on sale in 2028. However, the brand’s management does not now rule out room for other models.

Judging by these words, we will likely hear news from Lancia soon, and that these will include models not previously planned and not exclusively powered by an electric motor.
