The Mercedes-AMG A 45s at the limit: 600 hp for the German compact thanks to Renntech

The Mercedes-AMG A 45s has set out to show its true potential with Renntech, a company that has pushed it to 600 hp.

Do you remember that yesterday we told you that the future Mercedes-AMG models might turn to a four-cylinder engine? Well, it seems we have nothing to worry about. The latest generation of the A 45s and CLA 45s showed us that a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with proper tuning can be explosive, as confirmed by the 421 hp both models declare. But Renntech, a company specialised in tuning Star models, has decided to slightly change the ingredients of the formula.

The German tuner has decided to go all out and show what the new Mercedes-AMG A 45s is capable of. Not one to hold back, Renntech has managed to get ahead of its main rivals and prove that a four-cylinder engine can also be fun and very, very tunable.

If we visit this renowned company at the wheel of our brand-new A 45, we could leave with a car capable of outperforming an AMG GT-R. However, achieving that milestone is no simple task, and numerous mechanical changes are needed for the German compact to unleash that hidden potential, which will make the 421 hp it declares from the factory feel ridiculous.

Manifolds, turbo, remap and exhaust line are some of the components the German company had to tinker with so that the Mercedes-AMG A 45s achieves performance worthy of supercars. For now, the styling is limited to specific design wheels with orange-finished rims, a shade that also appears on the brake calipers, which may have been replaced with others better able to handle the compact’s new horsepower.

Renntech offers up to three different power levels for the A 45s to provide a wider range of options. The first raises the Star compact to a more “modest” 469 hp, not too different from the factory output. Second, there is a level of tuning that lifts its figures to 543 hp; but it is the final level that takes the Mercedes-AMG A 45s to a staggering 600 hp.

For now, the performance of this pocket rocket is a mystery to us, but considering the standard A 45 can reach 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, it would not be surprising if it now managed it in 3.2 seconds or even less. Either way, we are looking at a true monster that foreshadows the potential of those supposed future four-cylinder AMGs on the horizon.
